How It Started

In a sock. Hidden inside her bra.

That's how my mother wears her insulin pump. Not because it's comfortable — but because it makes it less visible.

She told me this after I asked why she didn't simply wear it on her waistband.

"I just don't feel comfortable when people can see it," she said.

And I understood.

My girlfriend, who also lives with Type 1 Diabetes, wears her pump on the side of her pants. For her, wearing it in a bra isn't an option — it's uncomfortable, restrictive, and simply doesn't work. Her Medtronic MiniMed pump is also larger than my mother's.

Since being with her, I've become even more aware of what it truly means to wear a medical device day and night.
